Cationic Polyelectrolyte
Cationic polyelectrolyte is a positively charged polyacrylamide flocculant, used mainly to dewater sludge in sewage and effluent treatment plants and to clarify water containing organic solids.
- Supplied by Zyax Chem, Mumbai
- Send your water or process details for a recommendation
- Bulk packs, delivered across India
- What it does
- Binds fine organic solids into large, strong flocs that release water
- Used in
- STPs, ETPs, food, dairy, paper, textile and municipal sludge handling
- Forms
- Powder and emulsion, in a range of charge densities and molecular weights
- How it is applied
- Dissolved to a dilute solution, aged, then dosed into sludge or water
What is Cationic Polyelectrolyte?
Biological and organic sludges carry a negative surface charge. A cationic polyelectrolyte neutralises that charge and bridges particles together into large, strong flocs, so water drains away quickly in a filter press, screw press, belt press or centrifuge.
Grades differ in charge density and molecular weight. The right grade depends on the sludge, the dewatering machine and the solids you want in the cake, which is why a jar test or plant trial is the best way to choose.
Where Cationic Polyelectrolyte is used
- Sludge dewatering in filter presses, screw presses, belt presses and centrifuges
- Thickening of biological sludge
- Clarification of water with organic suspended solids
- Food, dairy, paper, textile and municipal effluent
How to use Cationic Polyelectrolyte
- Make up the solution: sprinkle powder slowly into the vortex of a stirred tank to avoid lumps; dilute solutions (commonly around 0.1 to 0.2%) work best.
- Age the solution with gentle stirring so the polymer fully uncoils before use.
- Dose into the sludge line close to the dewatering machine with good, gentle mixing.
- Optimise by adjusting the dose until the cake is dry and the filtrate is clear; overdosing makes sticky sludge.
Choosing the right grade
To recommend a product and starting dose, send us:
- Type of plant and sludge (STP, ETP, industry)
- Dewatering machine used
- Sludge solids content and volume per day
- Current product and problems, such as wet cake or cloudy filtrate
Handling and safety
Spilled polyelectrolyte makes floors extremely slippery; clean spills with dry absorbent, not water. Avoid breathing dust and wear gloves and eye protection.

Frequently asked questions
What is cationic polyelectrolyte used for?
Mainly for dewatering sludge in STPs and ETPs and for clarifying water with organic suspended solids.
Cationic or anionic polyelectrolyte: which do I need?
Organic and biological sludges usually need a cationic polyelectrolyte. Mineral and inorganic solids, as in raw water clarification with PAC or alum, usually respond better to an anionic grade. A jar test confirms the choice.
