Oxidising vs non-oxidising biocides

Oxidising biocides (chlorine, hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, peracetic acid) kill microbes quickly by oxidising their cell walls. They are fast and economical but are used up by organic matter.

Non-oxidising biocides (BKC, glutaraldehyde, isothiazolinones, DTC, PHMB) interfere with how microbes live and multiply. They last longer and reach organisms inside biofilm, so they are often alternated with oxidisers: oxidisers give fast general control, and non-oxidisers reach what oxidisers miss.

Our biocide and disinfectant range

Product Type Typical uses
Silver hydrogen peroxide Oxidising disinfectant stabilised with silver Surface disinfection, fogging of empty closed rooms only (re-enter after the time on the label), water tanks and pipelines, poultry and animal houses, hospitals
Peracetic acid Oxidising disinfectant Food, dairy and beverage CIP, hospitals, effluent and cooling water
Chlorine tablets Oxidising disinfectant Cooling towers, pools, and cleaning and disinfecting water tanks
Benzalkonium chloride (BKC) 50% / 80% Quaternary ammonium compound Disinfectant formulations, cooling tower algaecide, surface sanitisers
Glutaraldehyde Aldehyde biocide Cooling water and process water biofilm control, animal house disinfection, instrument disinfection formulations
Isothiazolinone (CMI/MIT) Broad-spectrum preservative and biocide Cooling towers, paints, adhesives, detergents and in-can preservation
Chlorhexidine gluconate Antiseptic Healthcare and hygiene product formulations
PHMB and PHMG Polymeric biguanide/guanidine Disinfectant formulations, pool and spa sanitising, textile and surface hygiene. Not for humidifiers, fogging or sprays that people breathe in; PHMB pool systems must not be mixed with chlorine.
Sodium dimethyl dithiocarbamate (DTC) Non-oxidising biocide Industrial cooling and process water, paper mills

Choosing the right biocide

  1. Where is the problem? Cooling tower, water tank, RO system, surfaces, air, a product you manufacture.
  2. What is the organism? Bacteria, algae, fungi, biofilm, slime-forming bacteria.
  3. What are the limits? Food contact, discharge rules, materials of construction, membranes, operator exposure.
  4. How will it be applied? Continuous dosing, shock dosing, spraying, fogging or as an ingredient.

Biocides are hazardous by design. Always use the right protective equipment, store them separately from incompatible chemicals, follow the safety data sheet, and check that the use is permitted for your application.

Frequently asked questions

What is a biocide in water treatment?

A biocide is a chemical that kills or controls bacteria, algae and fungi in water systems such as cooling towers, tanks and pipelines, preventing slime, biofouling and health risks.

What is the difference between oxidising and non-oxidising biocides?

Oxidising biocides like chlorine and peracetic acid kill microbes quickly by oxidation but are consumed by organic matter. Non-oxidising biocides like BKC, glutaraldehyde and isothiazolinone last longer and penetrate biofilm better. They are often alternated.

What is silver hydrogen peroxide used for?

Silver hydrogen peroxide is a disinfectant used for surfaces, fogging of empty closed rooms, water tanks and pipelines, hospitals, and poultry and animal houses. The silver adds a synergistic, longer-lasting antimicrobial effect.

What is BKC used for?

Benzalkonium chloride (BKC) is a quaternary ammonium compound used in disinfectant and sanitiser formulations, and as an algaecide and biocide in cooling towers.

What is the difference between BKC 50% and BKC 80%?

The percentage is the concentration of benzalkonium chloride in the product. 80% is more concentrated and is mainly used by manufacturers who dilute it into their own formulations.

Is glutaraldehyde a good biocide for cooling towers?

Yes. Glutaraldehyde is a non-oxidising biocide that works well against biofilm and is often alternated with an oxidising biocide in cooling water programmes.

What is isothiazolinone used for?

Isothiazolinones (CMI/MIT) are broad-spectrum biocides used in cooling water and as preservatives in paints, adhesives, detergents and other water-based products.

Do you supply raw materials for disinfectant manufacturers?

Yes. We supply BKC, PHMB, chlorhexidine gluconate, isothiazolinones and other actives to companies that formulate their own disinfectants and preservatives.
