Cooling Tower Chemicals
Zyax supplies cooling tower water treatment chemicals for HVAC towers in commercial buildings, hospitals and hotels, and for process cooling in industry: scale and corrosion inhibitors, biocides, dispersants and online descalants. Clean cooling water keeps chillers efficient, cuts water use and protects condensers and heat exchangers.

The four problems in every cooling tower
A cooling tower cools water by evaporating part of it. Evaporation leaves salts behind, and the warm, open, sunlit water is perfect for microbes. Without treatment, towers suffer from:
| Problem | What happens | How it is controlled |
|---|---|---|
| Scale | Calcium carbonate and other salts deposit on condenser tubes and fill, cutting heat transfer and raising chiller power use | Scale inhibitors (HEDP, PBTC, ATMP), controlled blowdown, softened make-up |
| Corrosion | Steel and copper corrode, causing leaks and iron fouling | Corrosion inhibitors, including azoles (TTA or BTA) for copper condenser tubes, and pH control |
| Biofouling and algae | Slime and algae block fill and nozzles and insulate tubes; bacteria including Legionella can grow | Oxidising biocides plus alternating non-oxidising biocides |
| Fouling and silt | Dust, silt and debris settle in basins and tubes | Dispersants, side-stream filtration, basin cleaning |
Our cooling water chemical range
| Product | Role |
|---|---|
| HEDP | Scale inhibitor and corrosion inhibitor; widely used phosphonate |
| PBTC | Scale inhibitor that tolerates high hardness, high pH and chlorine better than many phosphonates |
| ATMP | Economical scale inhibitor and sequestrant |
| Dispersants | Keep silt, iron and suspended solids from settling |
| Oxidising biocides (chlorine or bromine based, chlorine tablets) | Fast kill of bacteria and algae; continuous or shock dosing |
| Isothiazolinone (CMI/MIT) | Broad-spectrum non-oxidising biocide |
| Glutaraldehyde | Non-oxidising biocide effective on biofilm |
| Benzalkonium chloride (BKC) | Quaternary ammonium biocide and algaecide |
| Sodium dimethyl dithiocarbamate (DTC) | Non-oxidising biocide for industrial cooling water |
| Sulphamic acid and online descalants | Remove existing scale from condensers and fill |
Most good programmes alternate an oxidising biocide with a non-oxidising one, because they complement each other: oxidisers give fast general control, and non-oxidisers reach organisms in biofilm that oxidisers miss. Wear protective equipment when handling biocides, and follow the product's handling instructions.
Understanding cycles of concentration
Cycles of concentration (COC) compares the dissolved solids in the tower water with those in the make-up water. Running more cycles saves water and chemicals, because less is bled off as blowdown. But higher cycles also push salts closer to scaling. A good scale inhibitor programme lets a tower run more cycles safely. Measuring conductivity or TDS of make-up and tower water each day is the simplest way to keep track.
How we build a cooling water programme
- Make-up water analysis: TDS, hardness, alkalinity, chloride, silica, iron and pH.
- System details: tower capacity in TR, circulation rate, metals in the system, current cycles and blowdown.
- Problems seen: scale, rising chiller approach, corrosion, algae, smell, frequent cleaning.
- Our recommendation: scale and corrosion inhibitor, biocide schedule and descalant, with pack sizes to suit your consumption.

Frequently asked questions
What chemicals are used in cooling towers?
Cooling towers usually need a scale inhibitor (such as HEDP, PBTC or ATMP), a corrosion inhibitor, a dispersant, and biocides: an oxidising biocide such as chlorine or bromine alternated with a non-oxidising one such as isothiazolinone or glutaraldehyde.
What is HEDP used for in cooling towers?
HEDP is a phosphonate that inhibits calcium carbonate scale and also helps protect against corrosion. It is one of the most widely used cooling water chemicals.
What is the difference between oxidising and non-oxidising biocides?
Oxidising biocides such as chlorine and bromine kill microbes quickly by oxidising them. Non-oxidising biocides such as isothiazolinone, glutaraldehyde and BKC work in other ways and are better at penetrating biofilm. Alternating the two gives better control, because non-oxidisers reach organisms in biofilm that oxidisers miss.
How do I stop algae in a cooling tower?
Keep a regular biocide programme, cover or shade the basin and distribution decks where possible, and clean out algae and sludge. Algaecides such as BKC help where sunlight reaches the water.
What are cycles of concentration?
Cycles of concentration compare the dissolved solids in the circulating water with those in the make-up water. Higher cycles mean less water wasted as blowdown, but need good scale control.
How do I remove scale from a chiller condenser?
Scale is removed with a descaling acid such as sulphamic acid, either online or during a shutdown, with care for the metals in the system. After cleaning, a scale inhibitor programme stops it from returning.
Do you supply chemicals for HVAC cooling towers in buildings?
Yes. We supply cooling tower chemicals for commercial buildings, hospitals, hotels and malls as well as for industrial process cooling.
Can I send my cooling water report on WhatsApp?
Yes. WhatsApp a photo of your make-up and tower water analysis to +91 98333 22685, with the tower capacity in TR.
