Phosphonate Scale Inhibitors (HEDP, PBTC, ATMP)
HEDP, PBTC and ATMP are phosphonate scale inhibitors used in cooling water, boilers and other water systems to stop calcium carbonate and other scale forming.

- What it does
- Keeps scaling salts in solution and controls corrosion
- Used in
- Cooling towers, chillers, boilers, industrial water
- Forms
- Liquid
- How it is applied
- Dosed continuously in proportion to make-up or blowdown
What is Phosphonate Scale Inhibitors (HEDP, PBTC, ATMP)?
Phosphonates work by threshold inhibition: at low doses they keep scaling salts dissolved beyond their normal limit and distort crystals so they cannot build hard scale. Some also help control corrosion.
HEDP is a widely used scale and corrosion inhibitor. PBTC tolerates high hardness, high pH and chlorine better than many phosphonates. ATMP is an economical scale inhibitor and sequestrant.
Where phosphonates is used
- Cooling tower scale control
- Chiller condenser water
- Boiler internal treatment programmes
- Formulating water treatment blends
How to use phosphonates
- Test make-up water and circulating water chemistry.
- Set cycles of concentration and blowdown.
- Dose in proportion to make-up or blowdown.
- Monitor hardness, conductivity and inhibitor residual.
