Alum (Aluminium Sulphate)
Alum (aluminium sulphate) is the traditional coagulant for clarifying drinking water, pools and effluent, removing turbidity and some colour by forming settleable aluminium hydroxide flocs.

- Drinking water plants, swimming pools, ETPs, paper
- Forms
- Solid lumps or powder; solution
- How it is applied
- Dissolved and dosed with rapid mixing before settling or filtration
What is Alum (Aluminium Sulphate)?
Alum reacts with the natural alkalinity of water to form aluminium hydroxide flocs, which trap suspended particles and settle out. It is widely used, low cost and well understood.
Alum consumes alkalinity and lowers pH, and works best in a narrower pH range than PAC. Where water is cold, low in alkalinity or fast floc formation is needed, PAC often performs better.
Where alum is used
- Raw water clarification
- Swimming pool clarification
- Primary effluent treatment
- Paper sizing
How to use alum
- Jar test to set the dose and check pH.
- Dissolve and dose at a rapid-mix point.
- Correct pH with lime or soda ash if alkalinity is low.
- Flocculate gently and settle or filter.

Frequently asked questions
Alum or PAC: which should I use?
Alum is low cost and well proven. PAC forms flocs faster, works over a wider pH range, lowers pH less and often produces less sludge. Our PAC page compares them in detail.
