What is Silicone Defoamer?
Foam forms when surfactants, proteins or other surface-active substances stabilise bubbles. In aeration tanks it can overflow walkways and carry sludge out of the tank.
Silicone defoamers spread quickly across bubble walls and break them, and are effective at very low doses. Where silicone is not acceptable in the product or downstream, a silicone-free defoamer is used instead.

How to use Silicone Defoamer
- Find the source: detergents, surfactants or filamentous bacteria; a defoamer controls foam but does not fix the cause.
- Dilute if required and dose at the point where foam forms.
- Start low and increase until foam is controlled.
- Avoid overdosing, which wastes product and can affect downstream processes.

Silicone or silicone-free defoamer: which should I use?
Silicone defoamers are very effective at low doses. Use a silicone-free type where silicone may affect your product, coatings, paper or downstream membranes.
Will a defoamer fix the cause of foaming in my STP?
No. It controls the foam. Foaming in aeration tanks often comes from detergents or filamentous bacteria, which need to be addressed separately.
