What is Iron and Manganese Removal Media?
Dissolved iron and manganese are invisible in the well but oxidise in air, causing red, brown or black stains, metallic taste and clogged pipes and RO membranes. Rotten-egg smell comes from hydrogen sulphide.
Iron removal media oxidise these substances inside the filter so the bed traps the particles, which are flushed out by backwashing. The right media depends on the water’s pH, oxygen and iron and manganese levels.
Where iron removal media is used
- Red or brown stains from borewell water
- Black manganese stains
- Rotten-egg smell
- Protecting RO plants and softeners from iron
How to use iron removal media
- Test the water for iron, manganese, pH and hydrogen sulphide.
- Choose the media and any pre-oxidation such as aeration or chlorination.
- Backwash regularly to remove trapped iron.
- Regenerate media that require it, as on the media instructions.

Frequently asked questions
How do I remove iron from borewell water?
Use an iron removal filter with catalytic or oxidising media sized for your flow, sometimes with aeration or chlorination before it. A water test tells us which media suits.
Why does my water turn yellow or brown after standing?
Dissolved iron oxidises in air and forms rust-coloured particles. An iron removal filter removes it before it reaches taps and appliances.
