Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) for water treatment
What it does
Adsorbs organics and removes chlorine from water
Used in
RO pre-treatment, drinking water filters, STP tertiary treatment, food and beverage water
Forms
Granules in bags
How it is applied
Filled into pressure or gravity carbon filters

What is Granular Activated Carbon (GAC)?

Activated carbon has an enormous internal surface area that adsorbs organic compounds, colour and taste and odour causing substances. It also removes free chlorine by a chemical reaction, which is why carbon filters sit before RO plants.

Coconut shell carbon is hard, low in dust and well suited to drinking water. Carbon grades differ in particle size and adsorption capacity, so the right grade depends on the job.

Activated carbon: quick facts

Made of Carbon (C), processed to create a very large internal surface
Raw materials Coconut shell, coal or wood
Forms Granular (GAC), powdered (PAC) and pelletised
Appearance Black granules, powder or pellets
CAS number 7440-44-0
Main uses Removing chlorine, taste, odour, colour and organics from water; RO pre-treatment; air and gas purification; decolourising liquids

Where granular activated carbon is used

  • Activated carbon filters before RO
  • Drinking and packaged water treatment
  • STP and ETP tertiary treatment for colour and smell
  • Food, beverage and process water

How to use granular activated carbon

  1. Size the filter for flow and contact time.
  2. Backwash new carbon to remove fines before service.
  3. Monitor chlorine and taste or odour after the filter.
  4. Replace when the carbon is exhausted.

Choosing the right grade

To recommend a product and starting dose, send us:

  • Flow rate and filter size
  • What to remove: chlorine, odour, colour, organics
  • Particle size or grade currently used

Handling and safety

Dust can irritate; handle with a mask. Wet activated carbon removes oxygen from the air in closed vessels; take care before entering filters.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a carbon filter used before RO?

To remove free chlorine and organic matter that would damage or foul the RO membranes.

How often should activated carbon be replaced?

It depends on the load and flow; replace when chlorine or odour starts passing through the filter.
