Non-Oxidising RO Biocide
A non-oxidising biocide for reverse osmosis systems that controls bacteria and biofouling without the damage that chlorine and other oxidisers cause to polyamide membranes.

- What it does
- Controls bacterial growth and biofilm on RO membranes and pipework
- Used in
- Industrial and drinking water RO, pharma, food and beverage, effluent RO
- Forms
- Liquid
- How it is applied
- Intermittent shock dosing into the feed, or during membrane cleaning
What is Non-Oxidising RO Biocide?
Biofouling is one of the hardest problems in RO plants. Bacteria in the feed attach to the membrane and form a slimy biofilm that raises pressure drop and cuts output. Chlorine kills bacteria but destroys polyamide membranes, so it must be removed before the RO with SMBS.
A non-oxidising biocide fills that gap. It can be dosed into the RO feed or used during a cleaning cycle to control bacteria inside the system without attacking the membrane.
Where RO biocide is used
- Plants with rising pressure drop in the first stage caused by biofilm
- Surface water, borewell or effluent feed with high bacterial load
- Systems that run intermittently or stand idle
- Sanitising membranes after an alkaline clean
How to use RO biocide
- Confirm biofouling: slime in cartridge filters, a rising first-stage pressure drop or bacterial counts in the feed.
- Clean first with an alkaline cleaner if biofilm is heavy, then use the biocide.
- Shock dose into the feed for the period recommended for your system, sending permeate to drain if required.
- Repeat on a schedule based on how fast fouling returns.
Choosing the right grade
To recommend a product and starting dose, send us:
- Feed water source and bacterial count if tested
- Membrane make and model
- Plant capacity and operating pattern (continuous or intermittent)
- Whether the permeate is used for drinking or food
Handling and safety
Handle with gloves and eye protection. Check that the product and dose suit your application before sending permeate to a drinking water or food use.

Frequently asked questions
Why not use chlorine to control bacteria in an RO plant?
Free chlorine damages polyamide RO membranes permanently. Chlorine is used upstream for disinfection but must be removed with SMBS before the membranes; a non-oxidising biocide is used inside the RO system instead.
How do I know if my RO has biofouling?
Typical signs are slime in the cartridge filter housings, a rising pressure drop across the first stage and falling output, often with a musty smell when the system is opened.
